If you want to learn about affiliate marketing, then you are in the right place!

How to Start Affiliate Marketing in 2020!

I want to start by explaining the concept of Affiliate marketing! I’d compare it to being a middleman. You basically recommend that customers buy something and if they do buy you get a commission of the sale.

For example, let’s say you LOVE playing basketball… what are some of the products you use to perform your best? Well maybe it’s your foam roller to get you nice and lose before you play, or even better your Hyper Volt massage gun, your Wilson Evolution basketball, Ankle Brace, your sneakers or your Beats Headphones.

As an affiliate you would provide information that people would want to know about the product before buying it…in doing so you would talk about who the product is good for, what makes it good, why you like the product, what you wish was better and so on. You could also compare the product against a competitor and at the end you simply offer a way in which to purchase the item.

The example Affiliate Marketing of affiliate marketing we’re covering in this tutorial is physical product based but the same principle applies to digital and informational products.

Now that you’ve got the basics of How affiliate marketing works… how does one get started in this process? Well the first thing is to

Pick Your Niche

Selecting the proper niche for your affiliate marketing journey is extremely important and I can’t emphasize enough how you should really take your time in selecting your niche.

The right niche for you would be something that you are 1st interested in, 2nd you have some knowledge about (or want to learn about) and 3rd it has products that can be profitable for an affiliate.

Going back to my basketball example from earlier. Basketball would be the perfect niche for me because I am interested in it, I have knowledge on the topic and there are a variety of products that are profitable.  For this affiliate marketing strategy, we are using the Amazon Associates program.

The reason that I would recommend the Amazon Affiliate program is because it is very easy to get started and as a new affiliate marketer you will have a higher conversion rate teaming up with Amazon the eCommerce expert.

Later, when you get more verse in affiliate marketing you can switch over into other platforms because you will have already gotten your feet wet.

Back to profitable products…

So, to be successful you are going to need products that are at a certain price point. Checkout the Amazon commission rates

As you can see on the chart…the commissions range from 1% to 10% depending on which category the items you promote are in.  However, most items fall under the 4% commission rate. So, to illustrate if you promote an item that is $10 your commission would be $0.40 but on the flip side if you promote an item that cost $250 your commission would be $10 per conversion.

You might be thinking I’m going to promote an item that costs $250 but I’m only getting $10 in commission that isn’t very much. In the grand scheme of things you’re right but the KEY point in this is that the $10 you do make was on auto pilot, you did the work one time, and if you did it right it will generate that $10 over and over and over again. On on top of that, with the Amazon Affiliates program you, get credit for anything the customer purchases over the next 24 hours, after clicking your link. There is even a hack that allows you to get credit for what the customer buys over the next 90 days 😉

Getting Started

When you are ready to get started, the first thing your going to want to do is RESEARCH! I wrote a in depth article here about the importance of selecting your niche early on in the game. Once you’ve taken those critical steps, you can select a platform. If you are on a really tight budget you can sign up for a free blog on WordPress.org, but we recommend investing a few dollars and getting your very own self hosted WordPress site through a provider like Go daddy or Blue Host.

Once you’ve done your research, gauged the competition, and created a content plan, you can then start thinking about monetizing. As we create our sites, we want to promote products that are exactly what our audience is looking for, or a product that will help them solve some type of problem. For example, let’s say you had a website about bowling. Your audience might be interested in finding a nice bag, large enough to carry three balls, and other miscellaneous equipment they need when they bowl.

To give you another example, lets say you had a website about health and beauty. You find there is a demand for under eye dark circle treatments, and as a result you gather the best treatments and create a nice 3,000 word article. Your main goal should always be to help your reader, you can do that effectively by creating meaningful, detailed content.

Get Inspired by Others

Something that I find useful when it comes to creating your first affiliate marketing website, is drawing inspiration from others who are already successful. With that said YOU NEVER want to copy anyone, but look for elements that are nicely executed, and add your own twists to them. Does one site format their articles a certain way, do they include info graphics, are they taking their own photos, are they really reviewing the products, are they using video in their articles, are they customizing product boxes, is the article laid out in a way that encourages longer page visits? How is the menu formatted? Is the homepage a static page, or is it the most recent content? There are so many different factors to consider when creating content and website layout.

Here is a shortlist of nicely done websites in a variety of niches.

Model Affiliate Websites

When you have some time, visit any or all of these websites to get a look at how top tier affiliate websites are done.

  1. Carbibles.com
  2. Wirecutter.com
  3. Thisiswhyimbroke.com
  4. Gearhungry.com
  5. Roastycoffee.com
